Postponing of 30th Anniversary

To all USM lifeguards and graduated senior lifeguards,

The present exco board has unanimously agreed that it is in the best interest of the corp and the graduated lifeguards that the planned 30th anniversary be postponed to next semester (Semester 2 2009/2010). A fixed date for the anniversary will not be announced until the exco board holds its first meeting at the beginning of this semester (semester 1 2009/2010).

The reasons for the anniversary being postponed is that communication between all parties including between excos and excos during the break is virtually impossible. Many are working, some don't have internet connection at home, some are outstation or overseas. The exco board agrees that an enjoyable and memorable night for the targeted amount of guests cannot be planned and carried out within 2 months.

The TENTATIVE plan is that this coming semester be used to fully plan and carry out all 30th anniversary related work, everything is to be completed within this semester (semester 1 2009/2010) so as to ensure that next semester's workload will not pile up. However, this plan is subject to change.

We apologise for the late announcement. I accept any CONSTRUCTIVE suggestions, corrections, proposals, alternatives or solutions on this matter. If anyone wants to respond, please respond with a heart to build up the corp, not to shoot it down. Please convey this apology and message to our senior lifeguards that have been notified about our anniversary. Further information will be available on our first General Meeting.

To our graduated lifeguards, we ask that you be patient with us as we plan this activity. This is something we go way out of our responsibility to do extra work, spend extra time, 3rd year lifeguards will have to sacrifice, our corp will be at its busiest just to come up with a night for you all. We ask that all of you would at least bare with us on this decision. We're not asking you to work at all, we're just asking you to wait.

instead of rushing all the way and may cause the night to become uncontrollable. postpone seems to be the better way to do so.

anyway, 2nd sem always the busy sem in the corps. adding in another 30th anni will cause more burden. especially those in final years as they have their FYP to carry on.

( i wonder is there the thought of combining this Anni Dinner and Aqua Night together as one??) -save work, save time, save money

**in bold --> sounds like shooting at the graduated seniors, to shut them down before they voice up..

hahahaha... LOLz...

anyway, no offence :)

The 30th anniversary will definately be done in my term. It will not be postponed till after i graduated or cancelled.

All work is to be completed in 1st semester so that 2nd semester will not be affected.

Anni Dinner and Aqua Night combined... that one have to discuss with exco and members first.

no offence taken =) and no offence meant also

To JY: Actually I think combining Aqua night and 30th Anniver is not a very good idea as Aqua night basically is the night for 3 'Aquatic' Division although LG has already 'preoccupied' it. I just personally feel not that right lar. Because we're not celebrating 30th Anni for the Aquatic divisions that we have in USM. So stil, I think have to let the 30th Ann stand alone lor.

To James: For the time being, nobody trying to shoot u/EXCO down. Just the seniors 'opinions' too, U should have announced earlier if/when u realized u're unable to make it. To be honest, 1e.g. although i know is not very possible, If a senior in UK and already plan to come back for the night and all the planning include the flight, the leave and etc had been done. Earlier to be informed is sort of respect to them too. We also not ask u to do all the job by urself, if u face any difficulty, u can always ask our help. Sincerely and by heart too, for sure we'll lend u a hand.

My 2cents, I think postpone is the only way that we can do now and the rumours already spread around before this. But since now it's confirmed, so what all the member/ex-member/commitee can do is plan ahead for whatever events coming. As for 2nd sem, U people have a lot of 'recreational' activity plus normal annual activities. Major and minor, I hope Interaction day, Aquatic night, Chinese New Year dinner events/venue should be planned ahead in order to avoid any miscalculation/mistakes to occur. For the first sem, don't take it easy as book 2 hotels at the same time is no easy job and u need to prepare the money too. Don't over spend. And the Aug that supposed to have the 30th seems like 'dikosongkan' already. Some of the people concerned that what will u have then? But for me is ok lar, have also ok, don't have also I won't die. If u wanna answer that by all mean, go ahead. Keep silent also no people going to blame u. So no worry.

my opinion for the anniversary is make it simple n nice where everyone gather around n enjoy the past things tat done in the pool.. gathering of all lifeguard shows that we are in one body.. espirit de corps. . .. so open up another topic so tat we can throw in idea n stuff to make it cream n cheese of the event... hehehe..

i am so sorry for any inconvenient. we will learn to communicate well and i hope you all can give us some confident on us that we can make it. to construct a group is not easy, especially captain. i hope you all know that if we got anything wrong, just tell us directly, and i am sure that all of us will think about our mistake. as what i think is, everybody got different opinion, is not wrong to have different opinion. but, in a community there must be have a head to decide which opinion should be taken. if every opinion of all of the member apply, the community will not run as smooth as well. erm.... So, Dont worry be happy ya. WE are happy family. hee.... espirit de corps

To Soon Jiun :
Thanks for your thoughts. I will seriously consider them, i actually agree also. But I'm really sorry also. Communication was my main problem. The reason the announcement was so late was because EVEN to call each exco one by one to discuss whether or not to postpone took me time. We had to get a majority vote AND make sure every single exco is clear that we are taking this action only i can announce formally ma. So that was my problem. On your thoughts about work during the semesters, i'll keep it in mind during exco meeting.

To Zi xiang:
Thanks for understanding. Let's get over this problem and continue to the next step. I'll make sure work starts right after 1st general meeting. Any suggestions on 30th anniversary, we will openly discuss in forums or meetings. I'll also try to get someone to update all the seniors on work progress so you all will know how it is going. ok?

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies. After all, we are all USM lifeguards, we're all on the same side. Sorry for any offence caused, none was meant.

p/s: I'm ok if anyone shoots, but if you shoot, please back it up with solutions on how to better improve the corp and its activities, Flaming ( just shooting without building up) is not welcomed.

To all,
thanks for your effort by organizing this event. Agree with Soon juin, plans should be planned ahead for the whole year. At least you all can estimate and know what to do.

I do appreciate all of your effort of planning this, at least better than what we did last time for anniversary - BBQ... wakakkaka...

Waiting for the next announcement for the celebration and will make myself to attend!

take care all.

I am not surprised with the postponement and whatever reasons given are unnecessary. I would not be interested find out. Having said that, things could go wrong. It happens. So dont have to be disappointed.

This quote best describes the circumstance which I think was the problem.
"If you do not know where you are, then a map is no use to you"

Similarly, if you have no idea how you are progressing against the project plan, then the plan is of little help to you.
I saw the plan and it was fantastic, but the first thing came to my mind was whether it was doable.

Now that you have one semester to make the event happen, I hope the progress is monitored all the time. Longer time doesnt mean an advantage. The enthusiactic could die out along the way.

For the event to happen, please be committed as much as study commitments.
I am glad it was not cancelled. I hope to attend, but will see.

Look forward to hearing favourable announcement. Good luck

I can understand the hectic work you all would have to put through especially final year LG members with their FYP and all that. Try to delegate lighter work on juniors that doesn't require major decision-making but important enough to make such night a success.

Well I'd be looking forward to hear from you all... Don't have to make a big fancy hoo-haa if manpower, budget and time constraint is in hand. I guess most seniors would be happy for anything as long as it's not too high on socialite scale nor too low to come as cheap.

I appreciate the trouble, work and sacrifice you all have made so far. Ganbate! Will continue to look forward for news from you all. Would worth my flight back to USM from Singapore just for this :)

Any of the current LGs need meeting conduction training or lecture, please call me. I provide 2 classes. 1. How to conduct a meeting 101. 2. How to organise an event smoothly 101.
