A few days ago, I attended a typical dinner at Chinese restaurant where the typical opening dish is Shark's Fin Soup. I know that most people say that this dish is synonymous with Chinese culture, but I plead with everyone to avoid consuming this dish whenever possible.
The reason I'm againsts the consumption of this dish is because of the wasteful practice of shark finning. To make a bowl of the soup, the sharks are caught and only their fins are cut off, then the poor sharks are then tossed back into the sea to die. They are no longer able to swim, eat or defend themselves.
Annually, 10-100 million sharks are killed for their fins, and this alarming harvest has decimated shark populations worldwide. Sharks like human beings are animals that are slow to reproduce and take many years to reach sexual maturity. Experts believe that the populations in some areas may never recover. This has a snowball effect on the ecosystem as sharks are the top predators in the marine ecosystem. Overhunting has lead to imbalance in the ecosystem.
Mainland China is the worlds largest importer of shark-fins, importing as much as 4000 tonnes annually. This really makes me embarassed to be a Chinese at times because it is due to the Chinese dietary habit of consuming exotic meats with the misconception of their supposed health benefits that is the leading cause of extinction of many species of wildlife. (I will discuss the Chinese black market in exotic meat in a later post)
As for now, I plead with you all again, to not consume Shark's Fin Soup whenever possible. There are many other great alternatives.
Nowadays in restaurants/hotels, they only serve artificial ones. Reason: 1. Cost vs Margin: Real fins today cost a bomb. Moreover, artificial one looks and feels almost the same as the real one, at a fraction of the price. 2. Conservation: Like Evan said, some restaurant do engage in the conservation practice, thus, using artificial fins. But I still believe my 1st point is more relevant
Only those of the famous and rich will source shark's fins for their courses. You can buy shark's fin, authentic ones cheap from Thailand, and it's easy to smuggle. :)
To know if the shark's fins are real or not, take a slow bite. Artificial ones are more like jelly, once you bite, it breaks. Authentic ones have a slight cartilage/tendon kinda feel.

Why Evan spoke like someone on Animal Planet channel? "When the buying stops, the killing can too". Haha..
I've stop eating whatever products related to sharks, it's meat and fins. I'm a big shark lover. I love sharks!! I don't want it to be extint. Some people even think "shark eats people, so we must kill it". That's only a stupid excuse as you are more likely to be struck by a lightning than attacked by a shark.

Yeah, last time I also ate those around rm180 per bowl shark fin before... That's really nice. But now I won't and never eat shark products anymore.
nowadays really less n less ppl eating on real shark fin soup ad. i believe is not because of caring the environment. is the price is getting higher n higher. no many ppl can afford tat small bowl of soup will cost u up to 100 n above..
however, since i m not rich ppl also n for environment concern (i m bio student, dun doubt me for tat), i will not eat sharkfin soup.. but i wont resist the artificial one la. unless it will cause cancer. haha..
I totally agree with Evan, and strongly suggest all the ppl should stop eating shark's fin!
U can make a differences...
In galapagos island, the place where Darwin get the idea of evolution, the sharks are getting fewer n fewer, why? because there is a chinese restoran on the mainland near the place...
Even there are alot of marine police guarded there, they still manage to get the shark FIN oni, why? because there are demands, and the benefits they get make them wiling to take the risks.
What happen to the shark? After cut off the fins, sharks will be thrown back into the sea and waiting to die... How they caught the sharks? Some fishermans use sea seal as a bait, so is double damage! shark's favorite food... they cut off the fin of the sea seal and hang it to attract sharks... what the hell...
Most of the chinese think shark's fin represent wealthness, so if ur wedding dinner dont have shark's fin, they will think u r not generous...But I dun think so, Yao Ming (current NBA houston rocket player) did the change, his wedding dinner dont have shark's fin... why? he poor? NO, is because of environmental concern!
The concept should be correct, The awareness of the ppl should be increased, shark is not that ugly as we thought...just the movie give us impression of it, most of the species of sharks are not aggresive to human being under normal circumstances... Great White Shark, of cos, but it cant be found in MAS, luckily, maybe Tiger shark la, it will come during certain season i think...I got the news, recently a guy who training iron man event in the sea biten by the shark and died...
