To learn, To mix with people...

I stop swimming since form2 and change to basketball with my JB gang, however I still think of swimming, I like swimming.

After around 6 years, I'm back to the swimming pool, this is the main reasons for me to stick to USM lifeguard corps, training, fool around, duty in the pool...

I miss the smell of chlorine although here not so strong as my hometown...
I miss the sound of water movement and splashing, shhhhh... shhhhh....
I miss the scene of swimmers swim in a row during training time....

Now I can see, smell, hear of them everyday...almost except the swimmer row...
haha...

another reason is I take up the post as SnR head lo...it is also a learning process for me personally...how to lead a bunch of people I dunno, n get well with them...

For me, I not join bec for certain people, because Im very cincai de, haha... like to mix around with anyone...

U le? Edwin Kon, wats ur reason to join lg ?

Hi everyone,

From my experience, when members first join the corps, they join for no serious reason.
Most just join because they think it looks fun or that they were influenced by friends.
There are even those who join for selfish reasons such as the car stickers and using the pool for free
The feelings of loyalty towards the corps starts to develop over time.
For myself, the best memories of my university life have been with the corps.
From my closest friends to my students who I have had the honor of teaching.
These little things keep me coming back.

i rmb tat i once admire LIFE GUARD so much.. mayb under the influence of "Bay Watch" gua.. n tat is the reason i told when i was undergoing the interview.. haha...

actually i feel become a LG is very yeng. like very professional. n when i joined the corps, i ad get addicted.. not only yeng +professional n also +family feel +frens +activities+ a kind of special bond.. (dunno how to describe) ^^

for sure, it will going to be my most precious memories tat i have during 3 years Uni life.. although i still got one year to go before grad.

most ppl quits LG corps because they cant manage their time well n mayb some other personal reasons.. its quite pity.. as mayb this will be the way we learn time managing.. Uni isnt going to be another pmr, spm, stpm.. study study study all the time... life will be meaningless if our Uni life also study all the time.. (no offence to rajin ppl ya)

join societies, join sports, n i choosed to join LG corps.. biggrin.gif

#ps: evan, u cant bear to leave us right... hahaha.. jus say la. dun be paiseh ma.. wink.gif

Actually I know nothing abt this usm LG Corp.
I love to swim, long distance non stop swim, I don't like sprint,as i cant.
Still remember, that after the 1st year newbie orientation, the 1st thing I wanna do is, to go swim in the USM Pool.
Straight after the oreintation, I went to swim alone.
Then, I was surprised that, Jolynn and Evan approached me and told me abt the life saving course in USM.
weirdface
I was amazed and so interested to take up life saving due to the reason that I can learn a lot more besides just swim swim swim for non stop.confused
Join LG Corp, not because of car sticker or enter for free, as I can drive here even without sticker, just less freedom to move around campus only.
I joined, just because I wanna spend more time in pool, I love to swim, that's it.
Some how, I facing great pressure in this club.I am lame, i think.
I, myself, know that i am so passionate to swim.but den, kenneth said, I got no passion to learn.

This post look like very old liao yet i just started to postt some reply... Haha...

Still able recall when i was first year time, 1 of my fren called Raja XXX ask me to join BM. An dat that time, honestly, I'm totally nut!!! Wahaha!!! N yet, a 'lo peng', if i'm not mistaken, Lu Ping says, join la join la... Dunno how to swim oso can... At least can move can liao... Got ppl will teach one bla bla bla... Then kena tipu liao... join BM lo... Then first meeting at the pool. My first instructor, Heng Ving, oso the vice captain at that time, ask us to rtake 100m timing. Oh man.... I still dunno how to swim le... die lo...

Nge nge go la!!! swim swim swim... cramp!!! shimatta!!! haha...

Then... The story begin lo.... wanna know ask me la... don wan to waste time here... haha

After get the first BM, HV ask us to join lifeguards as most of the instructors will do la. Then i ma sha sha go n join lo. Honestly, i dunno LG got any benefits at that time coz i don have any transportssss... Haha. Then, as beginning... Introduce yourselve, Why u wanna join lg bla bla bla. haha... Talk crap there lo... In my first interview... But dunno why will feel kan jiong when the short list come out oso...

For sure i got in liao la... If not i won't talk crap here also la...

First time get into the GM room... New face, new ppl... Everything new... Feel excited....

Yay!!! come the part that most lo peng like!!! Introduce yourselve again which i hate the most!!!

Then, start our duty life n of course BC liao...

Then come to tragedic year, my 2nd year that a lot of prob occur and my awards and dist level got pre pre mock, pre mock, mock then only exam. Exhausted lo... Almost can't take dist coz of the brick la. will never forget that!!! haha

Some how when become instructor, although i get not many students, but i really appreciate them for making so much pressure and of course fun la. See their improvement and growth during LS training and saw me myself during my first level time as i always share w them la.

Feel happy when i saw RW join LG even she is my only student left in the corps. haha. But at least i've made some contribution oso la... haha...

From all of the story above(of course there are much more), i guess u all can know why until today i'm still with the corps la. The bond between each one of us not just frens. Is bro and sis, even i'n not that closed tp some ppl in the corps, but is til dare to call them as my bro and sis. Because this is a fact!

I think for those who read my reply sure going crazy oredy... Why this soon jiun always like to talk nonstop one. (especially crap) haha!!! Yes, that's me, i like to talk crapsss, so if anything that i say had hurt ur feeling. Dontake it and forget it, i don mean it n we stil a part of this big family. Esprit de Corps. Yay

To: Edwin Kon,

Why do you think of yourself a lame?
Do you realise that you have so much more that others are envious of? (and I'm not talking about your abs).
You have the stamina to swim long distances. Do you have any idea what others would give for that?
You already have an added advantage over others. You must change your outlook. The comments that some of the seniors give you is meant to help you improve.
It's up to you to decide of what to make of the oppurtunity presented before you.

Cheers.

hmm..quite interesting topic wo, everybody wrote long long^^

my life with LG is such a big evolutionaww

before i enter U, i wish to try low profile Uni life, study, and get good result...

(bcz my 2nd'ary sch life is too active, what oso join, extremely busy and happy life, when exam oso byebye -.- ,not so teruk la, but not excelent neither, wondering how's the feeling of getting full A or 4 flat...)

When i enter U,1st yr 1st sem...i joint klinik renang...1st yr 2nd sem,Bronze med

my friend was so excited pursuading me to join swimming tat time, i had never seen and feel the pool water,so it sounds interesting^^ i admit that i joint bcz of friends~ but i also urge to gain new experience as well.

there were life saving too, but the people at the counter (dono who dy), said if dono swim better don take life saving...sigh!dono y when we(3 potatoes) joint LG corps, only realize there are ppl who dono swim oso joint, somemore very geng now, ppl lik zi xiang, soon jiun, and many many more -.- i dont think they are dff, bcz if they can do it, we oso can do it~ it's not easy too, very hard time of cz. so we understand the reasons behind this.

what we think "ng dai" is that, we missed a lot of things.
~~ppl who join in the 2nd sem are not qualified to be choosen as excos...haiz...such a long story..oso noe the reason behind it..we understand de T__T but still "ng dai", i wish my resume can be more colourful de..........
~~Besides, after my klinik, i oso cant swim, cant even cross the deep end, very scared. not my instructor false, he is very pro instead. my swimming skills improved vey fast after bronze med, that is d time i'm serious about improving myself to become ppl lik zixiang and soon jiun, as well as evan and all the life guard, swim so fast! amazing...
~~lastly, if i just dont care and join life saving straight away, is hard, but i can save back my money paid to klinik renang -.- bcz my aim is to join LG corps only...to be qualified, must pass bronze med, to pass bronze med, must noe how to swim...to know how to swim...blablabla...... so..like tat lol..step by step T___T

2nd yr 1st sem, i joint LG family...til now, 2nd yr 2nd sem...

the reason become simple dy,
~~bcz we finally can enter the LG room dy~ very proud of it ..haha-.-

~~and we can perform duty, very professional look, got whistle, free T-shirt

~~can sit on the high chair (but dono y alws ppl don lik sit there geh? bcz hard to talk and cant move around gua..)

~~can look forward for the year end gift...i heard that they got a digital watch eh..i also want~

~~can organize activities, serious in front of juniors, "gila" at the back, hahaha

~~can get a cert sijil perkhidmatan cemerlang i think, usm give de,always lifeguard the most ppl to be invited to the malam penghargaan

~~can make myself busy, altho academik drop dy, still very proud to talk to friend abt lifeguard, haha

~~my friends is almost all lifeguard

~~can go interaction day, 2nd fitness test<<outing usually,excited~!! a lot of fun

~~can get bf (not me,my friend biggrin)

~~blablabla...

and will join til final?? sure, must got head got tail, unless the exco don let..haha

Dont think u r lame, I dun think u r, no one is perfect, but it does not mean u r lame, u got ur own advantage n i got mine. I think everyone is the same, just try to think more positive and how to improve urself to be better, u r not lame.

Yup, I saw u during the beggining of the sem, the white cap guy, aww, sometime advice can be useful if u thk about it, why they say, is it u realy got problem or they misunderstood, think two ways, then filter it, if good advice, accept and try to correct ur mistake; if not true, why they will say like that?

Everyday is a learning process for us...

edwin... i wonder y u will think urself as lame ppl??? in wat "direction" u feel like? cos mayb we play too much fun at u? however, we do not mean any harm. hope u wont take it in heart seriously. as wat Evan said, u possessed sth that other ppl dun have. n many ppl wants for tat. u should be proud of it n dun thinkin negative.

i wonder wat is the "pressure" so big tat u faced in the corps? for CPR stuff?? for Aqua Night stuff??
dun pressure urself too much. we noe u try to do wat is the best for the corps. at the same time, have more confident on wat u present. do not think so negatively which only will pulls u down.

When I was in my 1st year, after orientation....

The Brick: Wei, so what you wanna take? I feel like going for swimming activities....

The Brick's friend: I have no idea, why don't we have a look at the booth there? It says Lifesaving something something....

The Brick: Yea, sounds kinda heroic, why don't we go over to join?

At the booth....

The Brick: I would like to ask, this lifesaving course, is it open to normal students or do you need any certs beforehand?

Kar Seng: No No, anyone is encourage to join and you don't need any special training prior to this course. How do i address you?

The Brick: Call me TY, this is my friend CT. We are interested in taking some co-curricular activites, especially swimming. Do you teach swimming too?

Kar Seng: Ok. In lifesaving, we do teach basic swimming skills and polish them, but the main training will be lifesaving skills, water and land based. Water based lifesaving will have skills like towing, underwater searching, restraining a victim in water, and basic surviving skills like floating. Land based lifesaving is more to CPR and transportation of victims. It is quite challenging for a beginner but it will not be too difficult to learn.

CT: How much time do I have to commit myself for this course?

Peng Kuan: 1 level will span throughout the semester and the training are basically 2 days per week, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.. Of course, your instructor might ask for extra classes to polish up your lifesaving skills and swimming skills.

The Brick: I heard there are Lifeguards here in USM too. How do I enrol?

Kar Seng: You have ask the right person. We are all USM Lifeguards here. Are you interested in joining us? Then again, you will have to complete Bronze Med a.k.a. 1st level to qualify in the Lifeguard enrolment. After which, we will have an interview with you to see if you qualify (jual mahal pulak). Since I see that you are fit, you can complete the Bronze Med this sem and join us next sem. By the way, are you a sportsman? I see that you are quite tanned and athletic (actually I was quite skinny then, I gained bulk only after Awards)

The Brick: I was a volleyball player, Taekwon-Do practitioner, and sprinter. But I only do leisure swimming, is it ok to join the course?

Kar Seng: Why not? As I say, anyone can join, there's no discrimination (unlike Malaysia)

TY: Ok, where do I sign up?

Kar Seng: Please fill up this form. Please come next week to the pool to have a fitness test, afterwhich, we will introduce you to your instructors and any training schedules will be discussed by then.

CT: Fitness test? What do we do?

Kar Seng: Very easy nia. Just swim 100M. No time limit wan....

TY: Like tat can lar, no time limit. OK la, then we'll join....

And so, I was cheated into taking BM, with my frend. Who say no time limit. Fitness test that day swam like hell. LOLZ.

We went throught quite a rigourous training. My instructor back then was Boon Keat. He is nice, but strict. Even during BM, he started pushing us in freestyle training. Always train till cannot wash hair, go back cannot study (tired - excuse nia actually). That time I do not have a transport, after training have to take bus sumore.....And everytime cannot chase bus, coz 'bor lat', watertread till kaki like cement....

Training was fun actually, I was not close to the LGs then. I did not mix around with them coz I have a different group of friends back then. After training, I just rush back to makan and game with my friends.

In 2nd sem, I sign up for the LG interview and went for it lor....

Peng Kuan: I thought you have been told to wear long pants for the interview?

(I went to the interview with my shortest pants, thinnest sleeveless shirt, slippers and my swimmin stuffs)

The Brick: HUH? Aiya, sorry sorry.....forgotten dy.

Peng Kuan: We do not tolerate forgetfulness in our Corps you know.

The Brick: Sorry....Sorry.... :P

Peng Kuan: Tell me about yourself

The Brick: I'm bla bla bla....

Peng Kuan: Why do you wanted to join?

The Brick: I dunno? Maybe fun kua, everyday see you all HOO-HAA at the pool and throw people into the pool like very fun like that. The swim together like very 'yeng' like tat. But then maybe I just feel that I like lifesaving a lot, and joining LG got discount mar in the courses right? Then I thought maybe you all need people also coz I heard your club is small mar. You all might want to recruit me for I feel I am up to standard. <---- Lansi leh....

Peng Kuan: I see. You view this Corps as a fun one to be in, but I can tell you this Corps will take up a lot of your time. We emphasise a lot on discipline and time management, as well as responsibility. Can you manage all that? And we as lifeguards, it doesn't matter if you join or not, we view quality more than quantity, being here for interview does not mean we will take you in. Even if we are down to 10 people we still can function.

The Brick: Like that ar. I'll try to fufill all that....

Peng Kuan: Do you have transport? (This is a must ask question, everyone will kena this)

The Brick: Yea, but my transport is a little slow and cannot carry anyone.

Sharon
:How is it so?

The Brick: My transport is bus number 11.

EXCOS: ....zzzz....

We talked more on my course my interest and after it ended, I was asked to wait for the news. It will be posted on notice boards....

Friday afternoon, I went to check, and my name was in the list. So mar go to GM lor....

TO BE CONT'D

CONT'D

Ok, went to GM, 10:15 p.m. sharp sharp was there dy.... But Wei Wei was late for the 1st GM, forgotten the reason, but it was kinda funny. Among the 1st years selected were (if I could recall correctly): Soon Cien, Mun Pung, Wei Inn, Jen Chiat, Lip Sin, Wei Wei, and I. Bee Hwa was also his 1st semester as a LG but he was in 2nd year then. Han-Yu and Po Koon joined 1 sem earlier.... And it all started off with the captain's welcoming speech and bla....bla....bla.... After all the excos have given their share, everyone started to stir in excitement.

I was like: What the hell? Why so excited....

Moments later.

Peng Kuan: Ok, as usual, we will start the duty slot picking session. Who ever is faster will get it. Just raise you hand for the duty time slot that you want.

OK, now I get the commotion.... IT's ROYAL RUMBLE!!!!

Man it was kinda fun at the same time rowdy. Everyone were like jumping up and down practically 'snatching' time slots for duty. Hahaha, I remembered I landed myself in Monday's 1st slot. All else is history.

So, life as a USM Lifeguard start from that GM onwards. I had to shuffle my time between training, studying (hardly), playing (all the time), sleeping (the only luxury I have) and also as a KKF member, drums team.

And heck, I got late to most of the activities and worst of all, the Interaction Day!!!! (I overslept for 2 hours plus I think). Joshua Hooi, Wei Kiang, Mun Pung (Sorry MP, 4 years dy....Can't recall well..... should be lar, can't remember dy) came to my room and almost took down my door you know....LOLZ.... I got my 1st, and my last warning letter that semester itself, with Sharon pretty much fuming. She said I broke the LG records by taking a warning letter in the 1st semester.... But I see now that SOMEONE ELSE has broken my WARNING LETTER RECORD.

Interaction day was fun, went to Bukit Merah. As usual, junior games was the best of all. Got fed chilli mixed with fishball or something, went high and low, over tables, under chairs, get pushed into mattresses, and lastly, I even got played by the 1st years as well. LOLZ

'Nuf said, life was fun back then. There was not much of friction back then, no problems whatsoever. There were plenty of 'shootings' going around, with the likes of Menh Chooi and Joshua, the blurness of Ying Chye and Hendra, comedians like Chee Kheng, Wei Kiang and Edwin. We're like family, train together, eat together. Heck, I felt that my 1st year being a LG was fun really. Although it really took up a lot of my time, but I enjoyed that, at least you don't fell idle.

I have endured loads during my 1st year as a LG, i got 3 stitches in my head, had multiple cuts on my feet, had cramps, soreness.... Tell you juniors, I trust that little of you had training so hard that washing you hair after training makes shoving a banana tree trunk up your arse looks piece o' cake.

TO BE CONT'D

to complement the above entry...i want to make 2 corrections...

1. Ok, went to GM, 10:15 p.m. sharp sharp was there dy....but wei wei still not
here...cos she late on 1st GM...

2. Joshua Hooi, Wei Kiang, (should be lar, can't remember dy) came to my
room and almost took down my door you know....and the other guy is
ME!!!...damn brick...reli wanna take down the door ady...

okie...why i joined at the first place..and still in the corps till the end?...3 reasons...arranged by priority...

1. to get vehicle sticker (yes...i'm a selfish bxxtxxd)
2. to KEEP fit (cant hardly improve fit)
3. to have fun (but why join LG to have fun?...duno)

so...after 4 years...did i achieve what i wanted?

1. got my sticker...every semester...

2. did KEEP my body weight...throughout my active years...considered
success...cause if no join...i know now i sure very very fat already...

3. no joke man...had lots of fun...the best i had?...
    - training for award and distinction...and take the examination...with your
       buddies and wonderful instructor...
    - going for lifesaving competition...especially beach and open water
       events...swimming, body-surfing and kayaking in the sea...great...

Cheers.

Well, sometimes, when got a lot of stress come together, may be from relationship, from study, all add up toghether will make someone feel really depressed. anyway, I am stronger den what's i think of my self is. Thx for cheering me upblehblehbleh

i wonder wat is the "pressure" so big tat u faced in the corps? for CPR stuff?? for Aqua Night stuff??
dun pressure urself too much. we noe u try to do wat is the best for the corps. at the same time, have more confident on wat u present. do not think so negatively which only will pulls u down.

actually that's my own problem. perhaps, I always want things to be done nicely, may be ,i am perfectism and always wan to do my best.when i cant do as what i expect from myself. i'll be very depressed.hmm
Like in 1st sem 1 st year, i don wan to take bronze med exam at the last minute. Because, I think, I should be able to do all the R&D nicely. but i just cant do well at that time.

But, joining life saving actually help me understand myself better.I can better cope with various situation den before.

And now, i realized that, sometimes, we just need to take it easy.
Life is so short and we should enjoy every moment to the MAX.

ermmm...

my 1st reason wan join life saving course is, bcos after my STPM, i happen to join a camp n saw a UPM ex-LG swimming wearing his long pantz n shirt, n swim quite fast too... tat i want to swim like him, but i cant, so i swear i wan to learn life saving if i have de chance, so tat can swim fast with my clothes on...
vy simple reason to join life saving course...but i really enjoy de life saving training.

to join LG, also the influence of the UPM ex-LG,
also can enter de pool without paying any tickets,
den my instructor ask me to join too. hahahaha...

reasons that i continue join bek in 2nd n 3rd is bcos ady bcom an exco, ady in board, cant quit, hahahaha...
but in master, is to enrich my post-grad life, i don wan to live a monotone life, just go to lab, den go bek home...
n also, ther r frens in corps...
though some say after join in LG, Uni life bcom vy vy bz, but if i have too much free time, i'l everyday cry for homesick....n bored til de mushrooms grow...bz life makes me feel my life worth, a bit 'fan jin', haha...

joining in LG provides me chances to go for competition (MASUM, Life saving competition),
tat makes me understand tat USM always send the big team to competition,
the noisiest among al the participants,
winning the least medals(compare to UPM, NUS, NTU...),
BUT stil enjoying the competition the most (for me la, dunno u al).
My 1st MASUM, really a nightmare,
being force to swim 100m fly by SHaron( ex,ex...-SD gal captain),
stil rmb on the plunging platform, she threatened me said'u must finish de event, o else.....'
but thanks to her tat now i can swim fly, hehehe...

For me, what brings me back again and again to the corps is the friends that I have made throughout my university years.

With the Lifeguards, I have a sense of freedom, that I can be who I am, but with others, you just feel like there's this invisible barrier that withholds your identity. Plus, the Lifeguards have a more open mind (talking openly about sex and sexuality), so gross and crude jokes are aplenty. wink

Before LG, I was very much the potato couch person with an occasional jog or swim once in a few weeks lol. Post LG, I'm more alert to my body and healthy living. Another plus point: Exercising provides smooth bowel movement biggrin

I also get lots of chances to explore makan and entertainment spots with the LGs as they're very much outgoing and adventurous, which I think also adds to the closeness in our exclusive group.

I'm going to miss u all ! Huhuhuhhu.... cry

Actually I've never dreamt about joining LG. My initial start of USM was a depressed one (I only came in almost a month late because I was under second intake or appeal case). Plus I was already outta swimming scene once I stepped into secondary school.

Su Yin was a very long time senior since primary school. I know she was in USM but I didn't know she's a LG until I saw her at the lifesaving booth.

She promoted it to me and that fueled my interest to continue swimming, plus to learn lifesaving.

I joined Bronze Medallion and then the LG family and never looked back since. It's like a family to me, from super seniors (lou peng) all the way to juniors. Many things happened, good and bad, and one or two major points in my life happened because of LG family too...
*hint hint wink wink*

If I were to die and an eulogy to be made for me, I'm proud to be claimed that joining LG is one of the few best decisions I've made in my life.

Once again, thanks Su Yin smile.gif

I joined LGC in the beginning of first sem second year because I took BM a semester late. It wasnt my intention to enrol in BM as I already joined KKF on first sem first year. It was my coursemate when we happen to drop by this LGC counter, he asked me to teman him as he was so keen about it. Being my first ever friend met in USM, i filled up the form with him. Not only that, the LGs on duty that time, was also a KKF member, somemore studied pharmacies. If they can, why cant I, eh??(ego)
So, as usual, everyone new students have to go thru the sort of fitness test. I failed, both of us to be exact. We can only swim breaststroke, what do you expect.
Then he quitted and left me alone throughout the semester training. Anyway, I never blame him because I was grateful for what I am today. If it wasnt him, I would be somebody who is naive and nerd(maybe). Of course, in LGC, I met new friends, had a relationship :p , and overcame shyness (Suyin, I am not SHY, ok)And I hold strongly on this principle, Accomplish Or Do Not Begin. So I didnt want to give up on what I have started, I spent a lot of time in the pool more than any other places. Miraculously, I manage to graduate despite my poor result. And I realised that I utilize skills I learned in LGC more than my academic as I started to work.(I do not encourage anybody to ignore his/her study). I got my first job through someone I met in the pool. In brief, I was teaching swimming, he(was an outsider) was interested and I taught him, the next thing I knew, I was employed to work in the company he was in.(mayb luck contributed a little)

So guys, my personal opinion, your future is defined by what you do today. your altitude is determined by ur attitude. my 2 pence for you, the forum is getting inactive.

Yo Raymond,

I totally agree with you. The forum is getting inactive.
I'm not too sure the reason for this, but perhaps it is because most of the members have returned to their hometowns and are lazy to log in or some people are already busy with work.

A month earlier, it was the study and exam weeks, during most of that time, most of the members are logged in as they isolate themselves in their rooms and kononnya "STUDY" at the same time, if you know what I mean.

Hope it gets back on track soon.

Jo Lynn: You're most welcome. I'm just spreading the joy. (:

Raymond: I did not say you're shy. I find it funny that people think you're shy. (:

To juniors: Try getting closer to the ex-lifeguards. Alwaya got 'kang tao' (something like connections) lol. Of course, try not to make it too obvious getting close to them for that reason... They always have interesting stories to tell on how the Corps was like 'during those days'.

Yea, the forum is kinda dead. We need more gossips?
