Hi all.

Yesterday i just caught a golden tree snake (Scientific name: Ask evan) at Tekun cafe. By the way, i just catch it without knowing what the snake actually is. Sound dangerous huh. But i just worry by looking at it as it was attacked by 3 cats.

I just wonder, why this snake can come out at that time (About 4.15) and at that place le? Is it related to our environmental changes? Haha. Think about it.confusedconfusedconfused       ideaideaidea

That day I went to Kellie's Castle and I saw a snake been caught too, but the staffs were taking good care of it. Is it annaconda? I'm not sure, I played with it. Environmental changes really brought trouble to the nature, nature has lost it's balance. We have to put more effort in protecting mother earth. Act now.

15th April 2008 around 10pm, I walk by Tekun cafe staircase where SJ got the snake, Amazingly, I saw 3 cats sitting there, then I wonder r the 3 cats are those SJ mentioned...

When I walk closer, I saw a snake, basically same size to that one SJ got... Pity little snake again...SJ, maybe U have to guard there everyday or kill the cats...

Whats the best environment condition for this kind of snake?

Yo Min Fey,

It always saddens my heart whenever I hear stories of innocent snakes being killed, especially by ignorant people. Most people have the misconception that all snakes are dangerous. The truth is that the majority of snake species are harmless to man and play a very important ecological role in the environment.

Sigh, just wish you could have passed by there earlier and maybe saved the poor snake.

Sadcry

The next time there are snakes in your area, give me call, I'll come over and help you if I'm free.
Don't kill the snake if possible. Just try and chase it away if you feel uncomfortable.
I'm trying to create public awareness of snakes and educate children especially.

Everyone, change your mindsets....a good snake is not necessarily a dead one!

Hi there,

I am exactly sure of the identity of the snake you mentioned in your post, but it is probably not an anaconda. Anacondas are snakes restricted to South America, and not native to our region. If it looked something like an anaconda, it was probably a Reticulated python (Python reticulatus). There are great pics of this species all over the net so you can easily check it out to be sure.

Cheers.

Hi everyone,

I've been very impressed by everyones interest in the snake and concerns about the environment, especially from students not from biology.
As you all know, nature and the environment is something I'm very passionate about so I'm very happy with all the feedback.

Increased human encroachment into the natural world has really changed the course of nature in these last few decades. I'm very sure most of you can feel the difference in the weather these days compared to when we were younger.
Global warming is very real threat to the world.

Snakes being cold blooded animals are even more sensitive than us to these changes. Clearance of the habitats is forcing many species into extinction. I believe the snake Soon Jiun caught was lost in the concrete jungle of Tekun cafe and looking for its way out to the nearest tree. What saddens me more is the midless persecution of snakes by ignorant people.

The snake that Soon Jiun caught for me is called the Golden tree snake (Chrysopelea ornata). It has a very unique ability in that it can glide for hundreds of meters between trees. Along with a few other species they are also known as flying snakes. There are great pics of this species at (http://www.flyingsnake.org/). Go check it out.

This use to be the most common snake species in Penang when I was a child and I could commonly find it in any part of the island. This species is only found in Northern Malaysia. But as I said, with development, it has become increasing rare and extinct in most parts of the island. Up to Sunday, the last time I saw this species here was 2 years ago. This is to give you all an idea at the rate of development going on in the island.

I hope, together we can all make a difference to change people's midsets and misconceptions of these beautiful creatures.

The route to change is through education.

Evan,

Today I watched NGC channel, a programme about snakes. So nice! All with a deadly bite. I did took pic with the snake, it's black with white/grey eyes, the skin's like jackfruit skin. It doesn't attact, and it stays there without moving because just ate some preys I think. The guard said there're plenty of snakes behind the Kellie Castle, they planned to set up a cage for the snakes in the Kellie Castle.

To: Ming Chee,

I have confirmed the identity of the snake you mentioned at Kellie's Castle. There was a feature on it today in the Star, in the Metro section page 6. It is an Elephant-trunk snake (Acrochordus javanicus). This is a secretive aquatic species that feeds on fish and lives in slow moving rivers and swamps. I hope the staff at Kellie's castle know how to care for it as it has specific requirements.

In the article it was erroneously identified as a water python. The true water python (Liasis fuscus) is a snake that is confined to Australia.

Cheers.

For further questions relating to non-homo sapiens creatures, please refer straight to Datuk Dr. Prof Evan Quah Seng Huat.

Clarification and explaination of species should be done by Datuk Dr. Prof Evan as he is our 1 and only genuine and precise Bio fact provider.

Please do not accept facts stated from other sources before confirming with our Datuk Dr. Prof Evan for there are consequences to bear from identifying the wrong species.

For instance,

Homo sapiens = all of us
Papio hamadryas hamadryas = only James (old)

Yeah, I think that's the snake. The staff said it feed on fish, won't attack human.

HAHA, okok... Thats wat I think of oso, I would like to invite Evan to be our snake master in this forum, hehe...

Homo sapiens is old fashion ad lo, now the modern human like us should be Homo sapiens sapiens (sub-species), according to what I got from the text during my first year... Homo sapiens sapiens are living in more modern era, the details I not so sure about it...

But just after the day i caught the snake. I saw a lizard too. But of course not that kind of climbing wall and eat all the insects on the ceiling one la. Not very common for most of ppl la. But this is nothing to Yang Amat Berhormat Dato' Dr. Prof Evan Quah Seng Huat la. That's why this time i never catch it. As i think i won't be so easily to attacked by any other creatures kua. Haha.

Got take pic la, if wanna see just come and see me la. In my hp. No time upload. Haha...

Yo Soon Jiun,

Upload the picture for us, that way we can share what you have observed.
We can even try to identify it for you.

Cheers.

Yo Soon Jiun,

I saw the picture you took, the lizard in the picture is the Garden Fence Lizard (Calotes versicolor). It is a widespread species that is found in open forest, agricultural areas, parks and gardens (not anymore). It is an insectivorous species, and the males develop a beautiful deep red throat during the breeding season. Get pictures at: http://www.ecologyasia.com/verts/lizards/changeable_lizard.htm

Like the snake, this species used to be very common all over Penang but not so anymore. It's common name no longer reflects its actual distribution. It is restricted to mostly parks like Botanical Gardens and areas with trees and some plant cover. As you can see, the lizard you photographed was lost and disoriented in Tekun just like the snake. Humans have displaced most of the wildlife.

Extra info; this species was recently introduced to Singapore and itself has disrupted the natural balance of the ecosystem there and started displacing the Green Crested Lizard (Bronchocela cristatella) there.

Cheers.

To Soon Wen,

Try to look at the snake from a different point of view. If I were you, I would be quite happy to be able to find a snake in my garden. It would mean, that your area is not yet over developed. There are still some small green pockets that can support wildlife. This in turn would benefit you and your family as they can act as green lungs.

Appreciate the little things.wink
